Although community studies have been criticized throughout their history, there is currently a renewed interest in researching community. At the same time, in the 21st century, the dissemination of Norbert Elias’ thought has increased, however, his proposal on community has been practically unexplored. The purpose of this article is to unravel the structural components present in Elias’ theoretical development on communities. Those identified are the following: communities are immersed in a long-term process of change in interdependence with the social structure; they are constituted by a set of close reciprocal dependencies among their members; they present power asymmetries and communication circuits based on gossip.
