Anglophone authors who subscribe to the relational theory of society, like Charles Tilly, Mustafa Emirbayer, and Margaret Archer, have developed a critical reading of Durkheim’s work. This view asks the question, “How is it that society is, and how, from that possibility of being, can it be analyzed methodologically?” Although the critiques by the authors examined here defined the central points for constructing their own ontological-social position, this did not suppose a comprehensive critique with regard to his epistemological position. This article covers some critical points of these relational authors with regard to Durkheim’s work, contributing elements that seek to question his epistemological position and balance Emirbayer’s affirmation (2009) that the ontological proposal about the social should be accompanied by a resulting epistemological position.
