BRASIL JUNIOR, Antonio da Silveira. Sociology in Rio de Janeiro (1930-1970): A Debate about the State, Democracy, and Development.Traducido porSonia Radaelli. Sociológica (Méx.) [online]. 2017, vol.32, n.90, pp.69-107. ISSN 2007-8358.
This article maps sociological production in Rio de Janeiro from 1930 to 1970, pointing out its theoretical-methodological variety. To do this, the author selects three sociologists who were part of the development of the University of Brazil’s social sciences to analyze their work and careers: José Arthur Rios, Alberto Guerreiro Ramos, and Luiz Costa Pinto. The hypothesis is that institutional and political conditioning factors resonated in the analytical frameworks of all of them, although differently in each case. In addition, he argues that a democratizing dimension in this sociology would be capable of displacing certain suppositions of the previous intellectual debate about Brazilian society.
