This article offers a general overview of the history of the lesbian-gay movement for the recognition of their rights. It traces the movement's different demands about criminal law (the suppression of homosexual practices as an aggravating factor in child abuse); labor law (social security and public health care); and family law (recognition of civil unions, inheritance). It also analyzes some aspects of the Mexico City Federal District Law of Cohabitation Partnerships: its symbolic importance, its similarity with marriage and common-law marriage, partners' rights, and termination of the partnership. Finally, it notes certain tasks remaining for the construction of legal equality.
