Can we understand the interaction between housing and the family as something more com-plex than a simple relationship between a container and its content? This is the central question this article asks. To respond, the author establishes the state of the art of studies dealing with these two cross-cutting themes, making it possible to think that the apparent obviousness of their in-teractions and the context of Mexican science made it impossible to make any efforts to analyze it until the early 1990s. The article thus analyzes the contributions made at that time, dividing them into two dimensions: the housing-household group and the housing-kin group. Finally, it proposes some conceptual tools that might help to deepen the study of these interactions.
