Abstract

BOY, Martín; MARCUS, Juliana  and  PERELMAN, Mariano D.. The City and the Encounter with Difference. Adults Living in the Street and Women Living in Boarding Houses. Buenos Aires, 2007-2011. Estud. demogr. urbanos [online]. 2015, vol.30, n.2, pp.369-404. ISSN 2448-6515.

In recent decades, the city of Buenos Aires has undergone major urban transformations. As part of this process, new forms of segregation and contact between groups that have different ways of obtaining access to and affecting the territory were created. The article focuses on two types of actors, who struggle to move through and inhabit central areas of the city: adults living on the street (ALS) and women living in boarding houses south of the city. On the basis of a number of cases, the authors seek to examine the use of the city as a resource and how an urban order characterized by conflict, solidarity, morals in dispute and the creation of otherness is constructed.

Keywords : public space; otherness; social differences; adults living on the street; women living in boarding houses.
