Abstract

GUERRERO, Víctor M.  and  SILVA, Eliud. Nonparametric Graduation with Smoothness and Structure Imposed by the Analyst: Demographic Applications for Mexico. Estud. demogr. urbanos [online]. 2013, vol.28, n.2, pp.429-468. ISSN 2448-6515.

A non-parametric statistical method is presented for graduating demographic data so as to obtain not only smoothness, but also to ensure that the graduating data follow a certain structure imposed by the analyst. The main aim is for it to be able to control three fundamental aspects of graduation: the faithfulness of the graduated data to the original data, the smoothness of these graduated data, and their proximity to a particular structure. The empirical illustrations use data regarding the demographic reality of Mexico and make use of various indicators available to interested analysts.

Keywords : comparability; Kalman Filter; graduation; structure index; smoothness index; Generalized Least Squares; Unobservable Components Model; State Space Model; Signal Plus Noise Model.
