Resumo
GERMAN-SOTO, Vicente e BORDALLO FAVELA, Ruth A.. It’s real, it’s not a myth, rising temperatures increase electricity consumption in Mexico and its regions. Estud. Econ. (México, D.F.) [online]. 2026, vol.41, n.1, e469. Epub 24-Abr-2026. ISSN 0186-7202. https://doi.org/10.24201/ee.v41i1.e469.
This study examines the patterns of electricity consumption in Mexico and its regions in response to changes in temperature and economic development over the period 2003Q1-2019Q4. We hypothesize that both the magnitude and volatility of these factors drive higher electricity demand, though the relationship is climateand context-dependent. Regression models corrected for conditional heteroscedasticity reveal significant associations among electricity consumption, temperature, and economic activity. Minimum temperatures represent a greater risk to the electricity system than maximum temperatures, especially in extreme climate regions. We conclude that climate change affects some regions faster than others, with important implications for energy security and social welfare.
