This study analyzes articles published by exiled Spanish journalists in El Popular, a Mexican trade union newspaper, with a particular focus on the texts of Emilio Criado y Romero. Using the newspaper as both a source and a stakeholder, I compare the discourse published there with the historical context. The period covered in this research encompasses critical moments in the situation of the exiled Republican government, both within the national and international contexts. The journalists mentioned above analyze the “Spanish issue”, in other words, the dispute over the legitimacy of the Spanish government between Francisco Franco’s Spain and the Republic in exile, within the framework of international debates and, of course, Mexico’s role in decisions related to the future of Spain.
