This article compares popular misconceptions about Gonzalo N. Santos, former governor of the state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico, using documents held in historical archives. Frequently referred to as the state cacique, Santos governed from 1943 to 1949. This article corrects the myths about him by aligning the narrative with documentary sources to support research on this Potosí politician and the period when he governed.
