Abstract

ARGUELLO CABRERA, Libertad. Violence and Life Courses. Microsocial Effects of Counterinsurgency in Atoyac de Álvarez, Guerrero, through Four Political Trajectories. Secuencia [online]. 2025, n.123, e2477.  Epub Sep 08, 2025. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i123.2477.

This paper applies qualitative life course analysis to link historical processes with biographies and tease apart the impact of violence on different age groups, comparing their conditions, agency, and political trajectories. It consists of three parts: 1) the theoretical and methodological approach of the life course, its main categories of qualitative data analysis and the historical context from which the questions guiding the study arise; 2) the presentation of four cases belonging to two age groups deeply involved in the counterinsurgency process that occurred in Atoyac de Álvarez (Guerrero) between 1967 and 1978, linking macro-meso and microsocial processes to demonstrate the differential effects of violence on life transitions and political trajectories, and 3) the discussion of results, noting that this approach allows for a systematic analysis of how biographies and processes of violence are linked, going beyond sweeping generalizations.

Keywords : life course analysis; forced internal displacement; enforced disappearance; counterinsurgency; Guerrero, Mexico.
