CARBAJAL LOPEZ, David. Lagos in Jalisco: A Catholic Town Confronting Guadalajara Federalism, 1793-1825. Secuencia [online]. 2025, n.123, e2480. Epub 11-Ago-2025. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i123.2480.
By the end of the civil war of 1810, Santa María de los Lagos evolved from being a town where Catholic corporations dominated public spaces, to becoming part of Jalisco, a liberal state project that embraced tendencies toward secularization, which in turn was part of a federal republic. In 2023, Jalisco’s federalism was widely celebrated. However, the case of Santa María de los Lagos shows us its complexity. While the municipal authorities tried to steer clear of direct confrontation, the local constitutional council has left evidence of its reluctance, doubts, and even majority opposition when it came to accepting a state Constitution that placed church corporations under its sovereignty.
