Supported by bibliographic, hemerographic, and documentary sources, this work aims to demonstrate, from the perspective of the civilizing process, that the musical activities and educational institutions in the city of Aguascalientes during the period from 1867 to 1887 were part of Mexico’s efforts as an independent nation to integrate itself into the concert of progressive nations. On a local level, individuals and groups, regardless of their social class, formed a community around musical tastes and the practice of music. On the one hand, the middle and upper classes (prominent families) supported the creation of philharmonic societies, promoted musical evenings, performances in educational institutions, and at solemn events. On the other hand, a more popular sector founded a philharmonic society and, with the support of the State, established a music academy for the poor at School No. 2 for boys, which was primarily attended by the children of artisans, market gardeners, and day laborers. The result was that concert or classical music, while predominant, coexisted harmoniously with traditional music in public, private, and semi-public spaces.
