Abstract

MOLINA FUENTES, Mariana G.. Local Adaptability in Right-wing Movements: An Appraisal of the UNPF in Chihuahua and Mexico City Today. Secuencia [online]. 2025, n.121, e2372.  Epub Mar 31, 2025. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i121.2372.

This article underlines the need to understand right-wing movements as complex, dynamic entities, whose local manifestations are far from homogeneous. To explore this premise, the author examines the National Union of Parents (UNPF) and its activism in two urban settings -Chihuahua and Mexico City-, under the premise that despite its national scope, the organization shows remarkable local adaptability. To test this assumption, the text presents a comparative analysis based on the central demands, the type of actions undertaken, the support networks, the capacity for dialogue with government and party actors, and the organization’s capacity for mobilization in its local representations. It concludes that the survival of the UNPF over time can be explained by the solidity of its central demands, but also by the flexibility of its strategies based on local political and social conditions.

Keywords : right-wing activism; repertoires of action; conservatism; UNPF.
