ALCALA FERRAEZ, Carlos. Vectors, Military and Natives: Yellow Fever and Malaria in Yucatan, 1911-1912. Secuencia [online]. 2024, n.120, e2261. Epub 03-Set-2024. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i120.2261.
The article presents the discussion of medical knowledge about yellow fever during an epidemic episode that occurred in the city of Mérida and other towns in the state of Yucatán between 1911 and 1912. This work was prepared based on the scientific reports from physicians who conducted research on this disease and malaria. The Statistical Bulletin was reviewed to contrast the figures provided by both scientists and health authorities. Regarding epidemic episodes, the reports were critical of the provisions of the health authorities because they did not constantly monitor susceptible people. On the other hand, the origin of the condition broke with the postulates in the medical literature. In addition, the clinical manifestations of the patients in the interior generated a debate on the methods for diagnosis through of laboratory analysis and therapy.
