Abstract

GONZALEZ MIRELES, Gabriela Sofía. The Confrontation Over the Abolition of the Cane Spirit Monopoly in Yucatán, 1781. Secuencia [online]. 2022, n.114, e1954.  Epub Sep 19, 2022. ISSN 2395-8464.  https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i114.1954.

In Yucatan, a cane spirit monopoly was established to support the maintenance of the military corps. Distillation was authorized throughout the province, the product of which was marketed through points of sale distributed throughout its territory. The objective of the work is, on the one hand, to present a first reconstruction of its organization, and on the other, to analyze the debate that was generated between the administration of the monopoly and the councils of Yucatan, to demonstrate the relevance of the establishment or its abolition. The arguments presented allow us to identify positions and tensions around the reorganization of political-economic interests based on the implementation of Bourbon reformism.

Keywords : Yucatan; cane alcohol; monopoly; Bourbon reformism; councils.
