LITERAS, Luciano. “Without Even a Patch of Land”. Indigenous Policy in Response to the Privatization of the Pampas and North Patagonia (1860-1890). Secuencia [online]. 2020, n.108, e1766. Epub 23-Oct-2020. ISSN 2395-8464. https://doi.org/10.18234/secuencia.v0i108.1766.
The purpose of the following article is to analyze the features of indigenous policy during the creation of a land market in the Pampas and North Patagonia in the second half of the 19th century. To this end, various experiences led by the chiefs of tribes of “friendly Indians” to secure land ownership are reconstructed and analyzed, focusing on the resources used, the type of collective action they encouraged and their outcomes. The main results show the importance acquired in these experiences of socio-political networks and relations built by the caciques in the border areas and identify the types of capital that played a key role in the process.
