Resumen

CASTELLON HUERTA, Blas Román. Pre-hispanic occupations in the southern the Altos de Jalisco: Reflections three decades later. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2025, n.88, pp.94-135.  Epub 09-Mar-2026. ISSN 2007-2392.  https://doi.org/10.22134/trace.88.2025.921.

Based on archaeological surveys conducted in 1986-87 in the southern region of the Altos de Jalisco, a re-evaluation of the temporal location of 30 recorded settlements is presented. In comparison with more recent studies, the relationships of the materials and architecture of these sites with the surrounding ceramic traditions in Jalisco and the Bajío are considered, pointing to an occupation during the Epiclassic period for most of the sites identified. The architecture of the sites exhibits patterns more easily identified as belonging to the Epiclassic period between 600 and 900 A.D., and akin to the Teuchitlán tradition, while their location and characteristics provide clues to determine their function. It is proposed that the presence of these sites in the south of the plateau of Los Altos is part of a corridor or regional control system that guarded the passage from different parts of the Bajío, towards the center of Jalisco, which must have been related to the exchange of basic resources such as obsidian and salt, among others, from neighboring regions, during this period. Finally, some observations are made about the temporality of the Peñol de Coyna, one of the most representative sites in this area, mentioned in colonial sources.
