WILSON GONZALEZ, Jania Elizabeth y CERVANTES REYES, Haydeé Lorena. Digital social networks and im/mobility on the Mexico’s southern border: Risk and possibilities. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2025, n.88, pp.68-93. Epub 09-Mar-2026. ISSN 2007-2392. https://doi.org/10.22134/trace.88.2025.920.
This article is part of ongoing discussions on human mobility processes and the use of digital technologies. It aims to demonstrate how im/mobile populations, during their journey and while waiting at Mexico’s southern border, use digital social networks. Based on a qualitative content analysis of public Facebook groups conducted between 2023 and 2024, we analyze the role of social networks as spaces of socialization with specific interactions and dynamics that are a fundamental part of mobility processes. Throughout the text, we highlight the dual role of these digital spaces. On the one hand, they enable the creation of support networks, access to and exchange of information, emotional support, and ties with places of origin. They even facilitate certain migratory procedures. On the other hand, these spaces reproduce risk dynamics similar to those found in physical spaces, such as extortion, scams, and misinformation.
