KUROMIYA, Aki y FUENTES MALO, Sinue Hammed. Transformations and struggles for the use of border spaces: Ethnographic cases in Tapachula city, Chiapas. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2025, n.88, pp.41-67. Epub 09-Mar-2026. ISSN 2007-2392. https://doi.org/10.22134/trace.88.2025.919.
This article focuses on urban spaces inhabited by people experiencing in/mobility during a temporary stay in Tapachula City, Chiapas. We examine the uses of these urban spaces and the struggles associated with them among various actors. We approach urban space and its use as representations of power relations and the systems that regulate human activity. Our analysis is based on the ethnographic description of three specific cases observed during fieldwork: 1) the appropriation of space through the establishment of a «Haitian market»; 2) the remodeling of the central park; and 3) the relocation of migration authority offices following neighborhood mobilizations. Our aim is to highlight the experience of urban transformations in this border city and to show how people in situations of in/mobility participate in shaping social dynamics by interacting with, contrasting, and opposing other actors.
