ANTILLON VALDEZ, Nivia Areli et al. Feasibility for production and marketing of Medjool date in Chihuahua. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2025, n.87, pp.149-180. Epub 19-Ago-2025. ISSN 2007-2392. https://doi.org/10.22134/trace.87.2025.914.
The date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is an important crop, considering the nutritional value of its fruit and its growing global demand. The study was conducted between 2018 and 2020. For this publication, the economic, financial, and market data have been updated to 2024. Through the review of experiences and technical reports, the date market in Mexico is analyzed, as well as the economic and financial profitability of the crop. Additionally, date producers were interviewed in the states of Coahuila, Baja California Sur, Baja California and Sonora. The results show that in Mexico there is a potential demand for dates of 6,403.32 tons (Mg), that the edaphoclimatic conditions of this region are suitable for cultivation, and that the values of IRR = 13.59 %, NPV = $767,604.57 and B/C ratio = 1.86, are favorable. It is concluded that the cultivation of date palm is technically, economically, and financially feasible in this region, which requires less water than the main current crops and there is a demand for the fruit.
