GARCIA FRAPOLLI, Eduardo. Community-based tourism and degrowth: Towards a reinforcement of local livelihoods. Trace (Méx. DF) [online]. 2025, n.87, pp.45-65. Epub 19-Ago-2025. ISSN 2007-2392. https://doi.org/10.22134/trace.87.2025.909.
As tourism, regardless of its modalities, has grown in the Yucatan Peninsula, local communities have been modifying their livelihood strategies towards more specialized tourism strategies. This situation weakens households and communities because it makes them more dependent on external forces and dynamics, modifies their local institutions, further monetizes their local economies, and makes their livelihood strategies less resilient. In this study, I argue for the need to decrease tourism activity in order for communities to strengthen their local livelihood strategies. To this end, I use as a case study the community of Punta Laguna, in the Otoch Ma’ax Yetel Kooh Flora and Fauna Protection Area.
