Community-based Rural Tourism (CBT) offers the possibility for local communities to appropriate a new economic activity, opening the way to the design of a differentvision of development. This article examines the characteristics of development built by rural communities through the example of CBT in the Yucatan Peninsula. Based on information collected since 2012 with the actors of local initiatives, we observe that tourism is integrated into the way of life of the communities, with particular emphasis on territorial, sociocultural, environmental and organizational aspects. The CBT is part of a set of strategies for adapting to current changes, empirically drawing its own vision of sustainability, building new development alternatives, which can be understood under the paradigm of post-development.
