The memoriales sent to the Third Provincial Council by the settlers of the dioceses of Guadalajara and Chiapa obtained that their parish priests receive the cuatro novenos of the tithe for their maintenance. The documents analyzed show the difficulties of establishing the maintenance of the secular clergy in the face of the refusal of the cathedrals to share the tithe with the parishes and the importance of the creation of parishes in the Hispanic advance northward in the second half of the 16th century.
