VALENCIA PULIDO, Silvana Berenice. Gender Identities in 19th-century Photo Albums in Mexico. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2021, vol.42, n.166, pp.26-46. Epub 01-Ago-2022. ISSN 2448-7554. https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v42i166.845.
This text analyzes the characteristics of masculine and feminine identities in Mexico’s privileged upper class in the 19th century based on the photographic albums that families filled with postcards and studio photos and exchanged with friends and relatives. We applied knowledge theory to studies of everyday life using key concepts like identity and gender. Results reveal that the particularities of those 19th-century photo albums portray the way in which the Mexican elite of that time perceived itself and circulated that image within that social group with individuals comparing and adjusting their actions based on the customs of their peers. Hence, these albums share common elements of this privileged stratum, and at the same time reflect specific qualities related to gender.
