Abstract

CRESPO SANCHEZ, Francisco Javier  and  HERNANDEZ FRANCO, Juan. The Construction of the Model of Fatherhood in Spain (1870-1920). Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2017, vol.38, n.150, pp.215-246. ISSN 2448-7554.  https://doi.org/10.24901/rehs.v38i150.302.

This article explains how the roles of fatherhood were configured in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Spain. To this end, we analyze two realities: the role of fathers inside the home (authoritarian, but increasingly benevolent), and their experience in the outside world where they confronted the threats that endangered their families. This approach, based on a content analysis of several newspapers published between 1870 and 1920, will allow us to understand whether the discourse on fatherhood expressed new values or was constructed on the basis of more traditional elements.

Keywords : society; fatherhood; family; authority.
