Abstract
CAHUICH-CAMPOS, Diana; HUICOCHEA GOMEZ, Laura and MARIACA MENDEZ, Ramón. Family gardens, cornfields and forests among the Maya: the ritual and ceremonial practices of families in X-Mejía, Hopelchén, Campeche. Relac. Estud. hist. soc. [online]. 2014, vol.35, n.140, pp.157-184. ISSN 2448-7554.
This essay presents a study of the interrelation between certain ritual practices and the gardens, cornfields and forests of X-Mejía, Hopelchén, Campeche, based on an analysis of the perceptions and ritual practices related to the productive systems that men and women employ to prepare ceremonial dishes, drinks and sweets. It shows that the garden and cornfield supply over 50% of the ingredients necessary to prepare these dishes, but that the physical and sociocultural spaces of this peninsular Maya town are also indispensable.
Keywords : alimentary culture; family gardens; rituality; agricultural ceremonies.
