This article has two aims. The first is to provide a historical overview of the existing Spanish translations of Tacitus’ Germania-from the 17th century to the present-explaining the context in which they were conceived and produced, as well as the aims pursued by the various translators. The second aim is to offer a series of annotations on the incipit of that short treatise by the Roman historian, using as a basis (and point of comparison) the versions established by the Hispanic tradition regarding certain translation choices involving lexicon and syntax. The sections 2 and 3 of the paper are closely interconnected, since the translational exercise undertaken for the new version projected for the collection of the National Autonomous University of Mexico must consider the earlier tradition, either to depart from it or to reaffirm it on the basis of historical, cultural, and linguistic arguments.
