Abstract

HAVU, Kaarlo. Juan Luis Vives and Classical Rhetoric. Nova tellus [online]. 2025, vol.43, n.1, pp.155-172.  Epub May 23, 2025. ISSN 0185-3058.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.nt.2025.43.1/071s00x24w67.

This article focuses on the reception of Classical Rhetoric in the work of Juan Luis Vives. We argue that Vives explained Classical Rhetoric as a creation of democratic and republican political context in Classical Antiquity and that he aspired to integrate this tradition into the world of XVI Century. In doing so, he emphasized the importance of decorum as a solution for verbal antagonism and as a persuasive speech in a new context.

Keywords : Humanism; Rhetoric; decorum; Persuasion; Politics.
