Abstract

ORTEGA VILLARO, Begoña  and  PEREZ IBANEZ, Mª Jesús. Links between Greek Epigram and Late Antiquity Latin Epigram: some Probing. Nova tellus [online]. 2010, vol.28, n.1, pp.179-222. ISSN 0185-3058.

In the Late Antiquity, Greek epigrams were used as models by many Latin poets, like Ausonius and the writers of the Epigrammata Bobiensia and the Latin Anthology. In this paper, we study the main tendencies and some significative epigrams about this influence in two types of epigrams, the gnomic and the skoptic ones. This relation has two stages: the first, the selection of types and themes and the second, the traslation or variation; in this stage, the main procedures in the latin epigrams are the literary or cultural adaptation and the stylistic and thematic amplification. The most important differences in these procedures among the three Latin corpora are analysed as well.

Keywords : Greek epigram; Latin epigram; translation; Late Antiquity poetry.
