After assessing Voss’ conjecture ιόντα in Od., IX, 388, this paper defends the transmitted ιόντα by linking it with δινὲομεν in a chiastic relationship. This connection would allow the participle to be explained semantically by the verb. Thus, the verse that relates the blinding of the Cyclops, one of the cruelest in Homer, would vividly describe the spin of the stake gouging the eye of the monster.
