In higher education institutions leadership is commonly associated to the occupancy of a formal role in the hierarchy structure. On the contrary, based on the concept of social identity, in this essay academic leadership is re-signified as the way in which researches define reality in their disciplines or specific fields of interest and it is argued that academic leaders are characterized for being creative minds able to open new directions for the generation and transmission of knowledge.
