This article provides an overview of the alternative funding mechanisms and financing sources used for public universities, it analyses the "Lottery Program" at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California (UABC for its Spanish acronym). It also Introduces its starting point and evolution, as well as the strategies and factors that were taken in order to consolidate the program as an innovative auxiliary funding grant program for the institution. The ground for this article consists in an analysis of its operational system, organizational structure, advertisement and promotional options and marketing strategies that contributed in the development of a successful model that could provide useful information to other educational institutions facing the imperative need for additional funding to complement the government financial grants.
