In this paper we analyze some problems emerging from the estimate of terminal efficiency in the higher education environment. First, we state that in spite of a formal agreement on its definition and relevance as indicator of the capacity of institutions to meet their purpose, what it measures is not always clear in practical terms. Then, we suggest the convenience of distinguishing between the educational process and the administrative processes supporting it, in order to clarify the theoretical statute of conclusion as the meaning which the different measuring devices might have. Then, we present a numeric example with data from the sociology careers at the UAM. Finally, we conclude with some general observations.
