Abstract
MELLA SAN MARTIN, Camila and MOYA DIAZ, Emilio. Expansión de la educación superior en Chile ¿La política de créditos estudiantiles ha logrado reducir la desigualdad de acceso?. Perfiles educativos [online]. 2024, vol.46, n.184, pp.31-52. Epub Aug 30, 2024. ISSN 0185-2698. https://doi.org/10.22201/iisue.24486167e.2024.184.61245.
The article describes the expansion of higher education in Chile and explores whether student credit policy reduced inequality of access between 2003 and 2017. Using the National Socio-Economic Characterization Survey, the effect of social origin on the probability of general access and to different sectors and institutions of higher education was calculated. The sample was composed of young people between 18 and 24 years who resided in the home of origin when they were surveyed. The results show that the student credit policy has managed to reduce the effect of economic resources on general access to higher education, but that this variation has been concentrated in less selective institutions, without affecting elite universities. It is concluded that this public policy has had a limited effect since it has reformulated -and not reduced- the inequality of access to higher education.
