This article is a theoretical review that begins with an explanation of the basic notions of literacy and disciplinary literacy, followed by a review of the literature on research and didactic application of disciplinary literacy. Two complementary forms of addressing these topics are emphasized: studies focused on what members of a disciplinary community do to access and produce text-mediated knowledge, and studies analyzing the characteristics and dimensions of disciplinary genres, specifically from three theoretical-methodological tendencies: the Sidney school, the new rhetorical studies and the sociocognitive perspective. The article concludes with a reflection on the educational levels studied from these perspectives since, while some studies indicate they may be applied in junior high school, research in Spanish-speaking countries tends to focus on higher education.
