The study was carried out based on results from an innovative teaching experience that used reading Don Quijote of the Mancha as a methodological resource for teaching and learning science. The sample consists of 125 16-year-old secondary students from different public schools in Valencia and Cádiz, Spain. The article analyzes competencies at each stage of the adopted methodology (reading chapters; posing problematic situations; discussion; introduction of theoretical content; formally posing the problem and solution; discussion of results; and consolidation activities). The results show how reading Don Quijote, as a tool to teach science, can become a very useful methodological strategy to favor acquisition of all basic competencies.
