Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the academic abilities related to different points of the educational and occupational path of 494 teenagers who belong to a 14 distance secondary schools located in a region whic is characterized by its low human development rates. The results showed: 1) that the abilities to resolve geometrical problems and to reading comprehension are tightly connected with the chance of acceeding to secondary education while remaining in the place where they belong; 2) that the analyzed abilities only offer a feeble explanation for the possibility to carry out paid occupations; and 3) that those abilities explain the educational and occupational aspirations of Indian young people, but not their migratory and occupational situation.
