This article is about four high school teachers' beliefs about the literacy practices in two specific fields. The author carried out a rigourous observation of two literature and two history teachers' lessons in a public high school and semistructurated interviews to each of them. The interviews are analyzed using functional systemic linguistics and this analysis takes into account the teachers' career and the identity paths which emerge in their rhetoric.
