This article presents some of the results of an empirical, predominantly qualitative research about the main difficulties experienced by students who have just begun their studies in an Argentinian government university. This study proves that the first year of the undergraduate studies turns out to be a really complicated part of their university course. The article highlights not only the challenges faced by this sector of society, but also the institutional responsibility related to this matter. In short, the author emphasizes how necessary it is for the universities to pay more attention to the first year of the studies and, within this context, to carry out active efforts to help the students achieving the transition to higher education.
