This paper delves into a part of the history of contemporary feminism in Oaxaca, analyzing the radio program Foro de la Mujer [Women’s Forum], which was broadcast on Radio Universidad, Universidad Autónoma Benito Juárez’s radio station, from 1979 to 1984. The aim is to understand the importance of this medium for the second-wave feminist movement, as well as its role in raising awareness among the population about gender inequalities. The sources used are the radio programs, documentation from a private archive and interviews with its creator, professor Margarita Dalton. It has been argued that this program had a practical objective: to bring “the personal” into the public sphere, to discuss traditionally silenced issues, to give visibility to women’s voices, to disseminate or make public their demands, to express themselves safely, to transform everyday vocabulary, and to contribute to re-educating and broadening women’s thinking and actions. In the end, it is shown that the value placed on oral communication over written communication was central for the case of Oaxaca.
