Abstract

IBARRA, Ana Carolina. Women and Property in the City of Oaxaca, 1800-1887. Estud. hist. mod. contemp. Mex [online]. 2025, n.spe3, pp.114-140.  Epub May 13, 2025. ISSN 0185-2620.  https://doi.org/10.22201/iih.24485004e.2025.1e.77962.

This purpose of this article is to make visible the presence of women as property owners in the city of Oaxaca. During the 19th Century, they had few opportunities to express themselves in public spaces, as they were not citizens and had no access to government positions. However, they were able to engage in economic activities and own property. Their involvement can be assessed through judicial and notarial sources. These sources also reflect the impact of institutional and legal changes of the time.

Keywords : women; property; legislation; liberalism; Oaxaca.
