VAZQUEZ ALVAREZ, Juan Jesús. Vitality of the Chol Language in Frontera Corozal, Ocosingo, Chiapas: The Role of Home and School. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2024, vol.63, pp.279-301. Epub 26-Ago-2024. ISSN 0185-2574. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ecm.63.2024/00171s0xw40.
This work is about the use of the Chol language spoken in Frontera Corozal, a community situated in the Biosphere Reserves Montes Azules, in the municipality of Ocosingo, Chiapas. It shows how the intergenerational transmission of this Mayan language is happening in the home and in the school. The assessment is made based on the factors suggested mainly by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Instituto Nacional de Lenguas Indígenas (INALI) in order to measure the vitality of languages. The use of the local language was observed directly in three age groups in the home, and the child interactions in the school, especially outside the classroom during the breaks. Moreover, informal interviews and some surveys were conducted in order to get the main linguistic ideologies in this place. The research shows the vulnerability of indigenous languages in a local context where Spanish is the language of preferred use in many spheres of activity.
