Abstract

ALEJOS GARCIA, José. Time and Space in The Popol Vuh. Between Myth, History and Literature. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2024, vol.63, pp.137-162.  Epub Aug 26, 2024. ISSN 0185-2574.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ecm.63.2024/00171s0xw35.

The theories and analysis on Mythology, History and Literature of Russian semiotist Iuri Lotman are major contributions to cultural studies. The present article analyses The Popol Vuh through the lights shed by Lotmanian ideas about the literary sujet, and the cyclic and linear conceptions in cultural narratives, allowing for an explanation to some paradoxes contained in this magnum opus of the Maya-Quiché people from Guatemala. The linear expression and cyclical content of this book, the conception of space and time, as well as the unfolding of the mythological characters are the main issues of this article, that aims at the same time to show the relevance of cultural semiotics for the study of narratives.

Keywords : Popol Vuh; Mythology; Literature; Cultural Semiotics; Iuri Lotman.
