Abstract

SAVKIC, Sanja. The Pyramid of the Paintings at San Bartolo, El Peten, Guatemala: Spatiality. Estud. cult. maya [online]. 2017, vol.50, pp.61-94. ISSN 0185-2574.  https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.ecm.2017.50.805.

The objective of this paper is try to understand the possible uses and meanings of the built environment -architectural and pictorial spaces- of Las Pinturas Group at San Bartolo, El Peten, Guatemala (particularly its third and sixth architectural phases), based on information of various kinds obtained until 2014. It is about the space configured in a certain way -intellectually and sensitively- to mean something. The visual configuration itself reveals what it is and what it is for. In cultures dominated by religious beliefs, as the ancient Maya, they are material, real spaces, manifested and imbued with a spiritual component; therefore, there are many iconographic and written signs that designate them.

Keywords : San Bartolo; The Pyramid of the Paintings; spatiality; Preclassic Maya; Guatemalan Peten.
