Abstract

The article retakes the archaeological information of Tajumulco, Guatemala, published in 1943 by Bertha Dutton and Hulda R. Hobbes, in which the Tohil Plumbate ceramic type became a Mesoamerican referent, as a long distance article of commercial exchange and a chronological marker (A.D. 1000-1200). Its facture quality and the symbols represented on it took attention away from the importance that should have been given to the sculptoral expression of 29 pieces. The finding of comparatively similar sculptures in the borderland region of Chiapas offers the possibility of establishing formal and temporal parallels given that the sites they come from have only one occupation period: Early Postclassic, with strong Plumbate ceramic presence.
