The paper explores the underlying tensions between discourses on itzá ethnic identity and the actual practices and orientations of this group. Conservationist discourse and its ethnic characterization of Peten, as well as the responses to it from the local people are examined. International agencies on development and conservation are observed as an instance of globalization that participate as a powerful external agency in the redefinition of identities in Peten.
