Resumen

CORDOURIER REAL, Carlos Román  y  MOSINO, Alejandro. Lack of Trust in Political Parties in Mexico: an Analysis of the National Survey of Civic Culture, 2020. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2025, vol.70, n.253, pp.23-52.  Epub 26-Mayo-2025. ISSN 0185-1918.  https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.2448492xe.2025.253.83086.

Political disaffection fosters an affective, cognitive, and behavioral distancing of citizens from the representative system. One of the manifestations of this so-called “attitudinal syndrome” is distrust towards political parties. What variables are associated with this attitude towards political parties in Mexico? Using data from the 2020 National Survey of Civic Culture, this article proposes a logistic regression model to explain the lack of trust in these organizations. It empirically contrasts different theoretical perspectives that postulate explanatory variables for this phenomenon, such as political-cultural values, the rational evaluation of the trustworthiness of political objects, and their institutional performance. The results show that a low assessment of the integrity and capacity of parties, as well as dissatisfaction with democracy, act as predictors of lack of trust. At the same time, the perception of legitimacy of some fundamental norms of the democratic regime (diffuse support), such as the party system, the electoral system and democracy, has a positive effect on the probability of trusting political parties.

Palabras llave : political disaffection; institutional trust; political parties; representative democracy; Mexican political system.
