Abstract
SOLIS GADEA, Héctor Raúl. Mexico 1968-2018: The Condition for Freedom is Fighting for It. Rev. mex. cienc. polít. soc [online]. 2018, vol.63, n.234, pp.315-341. ISSN 0185-1918. https://doi.org/10.22201/fcpys.2448492xe.2018.234.65807.
I seek to understand the 1968 Mexican movement from the perspective of its liberal-democratic demands. I explain the deep causes -the systemic contradictions and the weight of the past- that favored the short-term errors which in turn led to the Tlatelolco massacre. I offer an account of the efforts to preserve the PRI hegemonic system, the neoliberal reaction, and the hard transition to democracy. I reflect on the new period inaugurated by the triumph of López Obrador, its risks and possibilities, under a vision that insists on building citizenship and republican institutions as the only means to strengthen Mexican democracy and to do justice to the liberal-democratic project of the 1968 youth.
