Cuicuilco [online]. 2013, vol.20, n.57, pp.137-168. ISSN 0185-1659.
This text discusses a case study related to the research conducted for my doctoral thesis, which analyzes a therapeutic practice within the ethnopsychiatric school of thought founded by Georges Devereux, which was intended to improve access to and receipt of healthcare provided to people, who although living in Belgium, were foreign-born. I will debate the pertinence of this practice from the viewpoint of its adaptation to health care, being sensitive to cultural diversity and efficacy, stressing the potential principles and problematic aspects, following three levels of anthropological analysis: the one referring to the place, a public hospital in which registration is necessary, where, unlike other ethnopsychiatric practices used in Belgium that are not included in the network of care everyone is entitled to; another is that it includes the recipients for whom this manner of therapeutic care is designed, meaning foreigners; and third, it is related to its particular methodology, in which three emblematic elements stand out, such as the multicultural and multidisciplinary group of therapists, the patient-based thinking and the use of so-called "active objects".
